How is steel weight calculated?

Every calculation rests on one idea: find the volume of the part and multiply it by the density of steel — 7.85 g/cm³, or 7,850 kg/m³.

Sheet: Thickness (mm) × 7.85 = kg/m². A 3 mm sheet weighs 23.55 kg/m², so a 2,000 × 1,000 mm plate is 47.1 kg.

Profiles and tubes: Cross-sectional area (mm²) × 0.00785 = kg/m. For hollow sections the inner area is subtracted from the outer.

Manufacturers roll box sections and angles with radiused corners, while this tool assumes sharp corners — so results can read about 2-3% above catalogue values. For critical projects, talk to us.
